There are many choices when selecting braces to straighten your teeth and improve your smile. In El Dorado Hills CA, we offer traditional braces, lingual braces, and even Invisalign® aligners or other aligners to help improve your smile and bite!

Braces can be either fixed (attached) to the teeth or removable (like Invisalign® ). Traditional metal braces have been utilized commonly since the early 1900s. The ties to keep the archwires in place come in a variety of colors or even just stainless steel. Colored ties create opportunities to change them for an upcoming holiday, the season of the year, team spirit, or even a special event (black tie).

We have noticed an increase in metal allergies in our patients. If you have problems with rashes or irritations when wearing earrings, then gold brackets may be useful. Initially, patients wore braces made of gold. Gold is body neutral and can allow a patient to wear braces that otherwise they couldn’t.

Ceramic braces are another option when compared to traditional metal braces. However, in general, because the bracket slots for metal brackets are machine milled while ceramic brackets are hand-cut. The difference between the two techniques can delay treatment by 20% with the ceramic brackets. Because they are potentially more damaging to the teeth, we often only place them on the upper teeth.

The newest edition to braces are clear aligners, initially brought out by Invisalign®. Today there are approximately 30 companies that can make them. These are space-age and computer-driven treatment and are ideal for those who desire straighter teeth without the traditional “look.” These systems develop a series of aligners that are nearly undetectable with the ordinary eye and removable. Although each year’s improvement of aligners occurs, aligners are not as exacting as traditional braces, and poor compliance means a less ideal result. The great advantage lies in removing them for important events, and brushing and flossing are easy.
